Charles L. “Charlie” Hampton was born December 22, 1937 to Odell and Loraine Hampton. . He was a member of Coke Memorial United Methodist Church where his family had always been staunch supporters. Two years ago, with a family member, Charlie recommitted his life to Jesus Christ. He prayed and privately professed Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
He was educated in the Jefferson County Public School system, graduating from Central High School in 1956. Charlie was known for his outstanding athleticism and exceptional ability to play basketball for which he gained both local and state-wide recognition. He attended Tennessee State University for a brief time prior to enlisting in the United States Army. After two years of service, he was honorably discharged on October 9, 1962.
Charlie married Annette Carpenter and God blessed them with a loving daughter, Vicki L. Hampton, the delight of their hearts. Annette predeceased her husband and daughter on January 21, 1994. Charlie later married Hazelene Crutcher and was a kind and supportive husband and friend until her death.
Charlie worked at The Louisville Gas and Electric Company until his retirement. His coworkers and all who knew him recognized him as an avid University of Louisville fan and supporter of Denny Crum. He was a smooth jazz and rhythm
and blues enthusiast, with the ‘O’JAYS’, being his favorite artists. He also enjoyed fishing. Charlie was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, preference for privacy and very compassionate heart.
Over the years, Charlie had endured many health challenges. During the entire time his beloved sister, Carolyn Hampton-Quinn has served lovingly and sacrificially as his primary caregiver. His daughter, Vickie Hampton and cousins, William Rhodes, Jr., Roger, and Ava Reynolds have also assisted in Charlie’s care. Bryan Hampton, Charlie’s devoted nephew, was a bright light in his life.
On February 15, 2017, Charlie departed this life to enter eternal peace with his Heavenly Father. He joins his parents; sister, Barbara Stone, who preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted daughter, Vickie Hampton; loving brothers, Frederick Hampton, Donald Hampton; a beloved sister, Carolyn Hampton-Quinn; aunts, Charlene Rhodes, Irene Rhodes; several nieces, nephews, two step-sons; a step- granddaughter, and a host of other relatives and friends.
